Eliane Coelho is regarded as one of the most versatile and interesting artists whose repertoire ranges from Mozart to bel canto, verismo and to the dramatic German Fach

 

Born in Rio de Janeiro she first studied architecture and took private singing lessons at the same time. She continued her vocal training in Hannover in Germany. First engagements made her obtain a very large and varied repertoire of lyric and coloratura parts, from Mozart's Queen of the Night, Konstanze and Susanna, Rossini's Fiammetta (Il Turco in Italia), Donizetti's Norina (Don Pasquale), Verdi's La Traviata, Oscar (Un ballo in maschera) to Strauss’ Zerbinetta (Ariadne auf Naxos), Zdenka (Arabella), Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) and Berg's Lulu.

 

Her engagement at the opera Frankfurt slowly lead her to more dramatic parts like Marie (Smetana's The Bartered Bride), the title role in Dvořák's Rusalka, Alice in Verdi's Falstaff, Mimì in Puccini‘s La Bohème, Saffi in StraußDer Zigeunerbaron, and Tatiana in Tschaikovsky's Eugene Onegin

 

1991 she made her debut at the Vienna State Opera, where she interpreted practically all her roles of her current repertoire since: the title heroines in Strauss's Salome and Arabella, Mozart's Donna Anna and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Elettra (Idomeneo), Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, Verdi's Aida, Leonora (Il Trovatore), Desdemona (Otello), Elisabetta (Don Carlo), Lina (Stiffelio), Elvira (Ernani), Elena (I vespri siciliani), Lady (Macbeth), Abigaille (Nabucco), the title roles in Puccini's Madama Butterfly, Tosca as well as Mimì in La Bohème, Liù in Turandot, Giorgetta in Il tabarro, Hanna Glawari (Lehár's The Merry Widow), Giulietta (Offenbach's Les contes d’Hoffmann), Dame (Hindemith's Cardillac), Giordano's Fedora and Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, Margherita and Elena in Boito's Mefistofele and Salomé in  Massenet's Hérodiade.

 

She achieved a triumphal success at the Vienna State Opera as Hélène in a new production of Verdi's Jérusalem under the baton of Zubin Mehta.

 

Numerous guest appearances during the recent seasons lead her to the following theatres: Bavarian State Opera Munich (Idomeneo, Don Giovanni, Salome), Scala di Milano (Madama Butterfly), Megaron Athens (Elena in Verdi's I lombardi) Zurich (Andrea Chénier), Aix-en-Provence (Idomeneo), Deutsche Oper Berlin (Tosca), State Opera Berlin (Salome, Madama Butterfly), Stockholm (Aida and Arabella), Rio de Janeiro (Simon Boccanegra, Madama Butterfly and La Bohème), Tokyo (Salome, The Merry Widow), Dresden (Salome, Aida) and Paris Opéra Bastille, Welsh National Opera und Amsterdam always with Salome.

 

1998 she was honoured with the title "Kammersängerin" in Vienna.

 

During the last seasons she sang at the Megaron in Athens (new production of I vespri siciliani),in St. Gallen (role debut in the title role in Turandot), at the State Opera Berlin (Turandot) and the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Tosca), at State Opera Hamburg (Madama Butterfly), in Zurich (Fedora), Bucharest (role debut in the title role of Ponchielli's La Gioconda), in Frankfurt (Salome) at the Vienna State Opera (Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Tosca, Nabucco and the revival of Jérusalem).

 

In June 2005 she interpreted Strauss's Vier letzte Lieder with Vjekoslav Šutej and the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, and in October 2005 she gave a very successful role debut as Norma in St Gallen. In May 2006 she was acclaimed for her stage-role debut as La Gioconda in Manaús.

 

The 2006/2007 season included her role successful debut as Katerina Ismailova in Shostakovitch’s Lady Macbeth from Mzensk in Manaús, La Gioconda in Sao Paolo, Lina in Stiffelio in a concert performance for the Romanian Radio in Bucharest, an operatic concerts in Basel and in Manaús, a concert with French orchestra songs in Rio de Janeiro as well as a gala performance at the Bucharest State opera of Tosca with Eduard Tumagian and Juremir Vieira.

 

A DVD recording of Verdi's Requiem will be released shortly, as well as a recital CD with music by Strauss, Wagner and Bellini.

 

The year 2008 started with an important role debut: The title role in Puccini's Manon Lescaut in Bucharest, where she also sang Amelia in a gala performance of Simon Boccanegra in March 2008.

 

Her next role debut will be Chimène in Massenet’s Le Cid for Opera Amazonas in Manaus in April 2009.

 

Furthermore Eliane Coelho is also a regular guest at the great concert platforms, for example with Verdi's Requiem (Vienna Musikverein, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv), Dvořák's Stabat Mater, Strauss’s Vier letzte Lieder or Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été. Most recently she sang a Lieder recital in the Moscow Conservatory in May 2008, which was broadcast live on Russian TV, a Puccini-Gala concert in Arad featuring excerpts from almost every Puccini opera in November 2008 as well as a Richard Strauss concert in Rio in September 2008.
