Born in South Wales, Richard Wiegold trained at the RNCM and is continuing his studies with Anthony Roden.
First engagements included Snug in Britten‘s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with English Touring Opera, Macrobio in Rossini’s La Pietra del Paragone at Stanley Hall Opera, Ferrando in Verdi’s Il trovatore at the Canterbury Festival, Banquo in Verdi’s Macbeth with Scottish Opera, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte at Longborough Festival Opera, Talbot in Verdi’s Giovanna D’Arco, Rocco in Beethoven’s Leonore for Chelsea Opera Group as well as his Asian debut with the Macao Orchestra and En Shao.
Other important engagements of the last years include major roles at the Montepulciano Festival, Commendatore in Don Giovanni and Pistola in Verdi’s Falstaff at the Festival de Belle-Ile, Bonze in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly for Scottish Opera, Pfarrer/Dachs in Janacek’s Das Schlaue Füchslein for Wiener Kammeroper, Arkel in Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Commendatore in Don Giovanni for the Canadian Opera Company.
In June 2009, he made his Royal Opera Covent Garden debut, singing Dr. Grenvil in La Traviata. The performance was broadcast live to cinemas around the globe. Prior to that, he sang Rocco in Fidelio in a concert performance in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
He returned to Covent Garden to cover King Marke in Tristan und Isolde and appeared there again as Dr. Grenvil (La Traviata) in July 2010. The same role he was performing at the Tokyo guest performances of the Royal Opera in September, where he was also covering Comte Des Grieux in Massenet‘s Manon.
In May 2010, he appeared for the first time as King Marke at the State Opera Prague, conducted by Jan Latham-König. In August 2010, he was be working with Valery Gergiev in a concert performance of Salome (1st Nazarene and 2nd Solider) at Verbier Festival and in October 2010 he appeared for the first time in Bilbao, as Mr Ott in Floyd's Susannah.
In February 2011, he took part in a concert performance of Donizetti's Belisario at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, conducted by Richard Bonynge. His debut at Salzburg Easter Festival will be in 2011 in Strauss’s Salome, which has also been performed at the Philharmonic Hall in Berlin in March 2011. His role debut as Gurnemanz in Wagner's Parsifal followed in August 2011 in Tallin in a new production by Nicola Raab.
Performances in 2011/12 include La Traviata (Dr. Grenvil), Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Hans Schwarz) at Covent Garden and Martinu's Juliette ou la clé des songes in Génève. Also in 2012, he will be appearing as Reinmar in Tannhäuser and also as Stefano Colonna in Wagner's Rienzi in Toulouse. In 2014, he will debut at Teatro Real Madrid in Salome.
